I was already interested in checking out some of the events happening during foundresses week, however, given the additional reading and the opportunity to not have class, I became even more interested. I planned to attend the meet the Sister's luncheon in St Josephs, but I had the wrong dates; I was a whole week off. Anyways, I went to see if I could at least meet a sister because I could not stay for the lunch.
I got there 5 minutes left before the event began and the sisters were all engaged in conversation with other people so I left. On my way out a very sweet smiling woman was walking towards me. I asked if she was a sister and she said yes and that her name was Sister Yvonne. We talked for about 10 minutes before she had to leave for the lunch, however, I think she would have chatted with me longer if she could.
I really gained a wonderful perspective of the sisters, or of sisters in general. I am not Catholic so my
knowledge of the Catholic religion is very limited. I asked Sister Yvonne why she chose to be a nun. She shared with me that her experience with sisters in her private school inspired her to become a sister. She said that they brought her joy and their countenance really stood out to her. After some chatting, she shared with me that she loved both founding sister, but because she knew Sister Julie Billiart first, she was her favorite. After saying that, she giggled and told me a story about a young girl and her boyfriend. Apparently, this young woman invited her boyfriend to an event held by sister in Billiart hall. The boyfriend came, dressed casually, and walked into the event and immediately walked out. He thought his girlfriend invited him to a billiard hall and thought they would be hanging out and playing pool. LOL!
I learned in this 10-minute conversation something very new and why I should be proud to be attending NDNU. I can say that I have finally met a sister/nun. I can say that they are loving women with a sweet demeanor. I can talk about our founding sisters, their lives, and can share a little bit about one sister who is living here today. Sister Yvonne invited me to come down and meet her and we can chat some more and I intend on taking her up on the invitation. This was such a great experience and I am glad Professor Andrews made it a point for us to learn about out foundresses!
